Cooking is the clearest example of a task where your hands are always busy and the information you need is always somewhere else. A recipe on a phone that keeps locking itself, flour on your fingers, and a pan that wants attention right now.

It is also, for a lot of older cooks, the first thing that quietly gets harder. Not the cooking, which is mostly muscle memory by that point, but the reading around it. Small print on a packet, a faded handwritten card, the tiny numbers on an oven dial.

The recipe problem

Everyone has done this. You wash your hands to unlock the phone, read one line, put the phone down, do the step, then wash your hands again. Four times per recipe, minimum.

Asking out loud removes the loop. With Glimpse open and pointed at the book or the screen, you say what is the next step and you hear it, and your hands stay exactly where they were. The follow up questions are where it gets genuinely useful: how much butter again, what temperature was the oven, read me the whole ingredient list so I can check I have everything, how long does it say to rest it, what is 350 fahrenheit in celsius.

That last one matters more than it should. Half the recipes on the internet use the other country's units, and doing the conversion with wet hands is exactly the moment you get it wrong by a factor of ten.

Is it done yet?

This is the question people try first, so it deserves a straight answer.

AI vision is reasonably good at the visual cues cooks already use. Whether onions have gone translucent, whether a crust has coloured, whether a cake has pulled away from the sides, whether a steak has a proper sear. Point at the pan, ask does this look done, and you will get a sensible read on appearance.

What it cannot do is see inside anything. It does not know the internal temperature of a chicken thigh and neither does any other camera. Use a thermometer for meat, use the camera for the parts that really are visual, and do not let a confident answer talk you out of the thermometer.

The honest split

Good at: colour, browning, texture, whether something has separated or curdled, reading a packet, identifying an unlabelled herb, telling two similar spices apart.

Not to be trusted with: internal doneness of meat, whether something has spoiled, and anything where food safety is the actual question. Smell, temperature and dates beat a camera every time.

What is this and can I still use it

Two questions come up constantly in a kitchen and both happen to be visual.

What is this? An unlabelled jar from the back of the cupboard, a herb from the garden, a vegetable somebody gave you. Hold it up and ask. It will usually name it and quite often tell you what to do with it.

Is this still good? Point at the date on the packet and ask what it says and whether that date has passed. That part is reliable. Whether the thing inside has actually gone off is not a camera question, and the answer to that one is your nose.

Cooking for someone with a restriction

If you are cooking for a grandchild with a nut allergy or a partner on a low salt diet, asking about a packet is faster and safer than reading the back of it in bad kitchen light. Hold it up and ask does this contain nuts, or how much sodium per serving.

For a serious allergy, read the packet yourself as well. Two checks, one of which takes a second, beats one check done badly because the print was too small to bother with.

Where the glasses change things

Cooking is the strongest argument for wearing the camera rather than holding it. Your hands are occupied by definition, they are frequently wet, and you are moving between the counter, the hob and the fridge. Every one of those makes picking up a phone slightly worse.

Common questions

Can AI tell if chicken is cooked?

It can describe how the outside looks, which is useful, but it cannot see internal temperature. Use a meat thermometer for anything where undercooking is a safety risk.

Can it read a handwritten recipe card?

Often yes if the writing is clear and the card is flat. Faded ink and cursive are much harder. Print is always more reliable than handwriting.

Can it convert recipe measurements?

Yes. You can ask for fahrenheit to celsius, cups to grams, or how much of an ingredient a halved recipe needs, without touching anything.
